Otto is ProHair's own professional tool brand. Rather than reselling someone else's shears under a licence, we specify, build and stand behind these tools ourselves — which is why the steel grade, the blade geometry and the handle design are stated plainly on every product page instead of hidden behind marketing language.

What is Otto, and who makes it?
Otto is ProHair's own professional tool brand. It also means the tools are sold at a working professional's price rather than a distributor's markup — the 6-inch professional shear is $96.00 and the thinning shear $99.99.
What does 'Japanese 440C steel' actually mean?
440C is a high-carbon (roughly 0.95–1.20%), high-chromium (16–18%) martensitic stainless steel. The carbon lets the blade be hardened to about 58–60 HRC so it holds a fine convex edge; the chromium forms the passive layer that resists the colour, bleach and perm chemistry a salon blade meets daily. 'Japanese' refers to where the steel is milled — Japanese mills are known for tight alloy consistency and low inclusion counts, which matters because a single inclusion at a convex edge is a future chip. Our 440C guide compares it against 420, VG-10 and powder-metallurgy steels.
What is the difference between convex and bevelled blades, and does it matter?
It decides which techniques the shear can perform. A bevelled edge is ground flat, usually with a micro-serration that grips the hair — robust, forgiving, and excellent for blunt wet cutting. A convex edge is ground on a curve to a very acute apex with no serration, so it parts hair rather than pinching it. Slice cutting only works on a convex edge: on a serrated blade the hair bunches and you get a chewed result instead of a clean taper. If dry detailing and slice cutting are part of your work, convex is a requirement, not an upgrade.
What does 'extreme hollow ground' mean?
Hollow grinding is separate from the edge grind. It is the concave scoop machined into the inside face of the blade behind the edge, so the two blades touch essentially only where they cross rather than riding against each other along their whole length. Extreme hollow grinding minimises that contact further. In practice you get less friction and heat, a quieter and smoother cut, the ability to run lighter tension — which reduces hand fatigue — and blades that stay sharp longer because they are wearing against each other less.
What does a 3D-offset handle do that a normal handle does not?
An offset handle sets the thumb ring shorter and further forward so you can keep the blade level with your elbow down and your shoulder relaxed, instead of the 'chicken wing' posture that symmetrical opposing handles force. A 3D-offset goes further: the thumb ring is angled and canted so the thumb sits in its natural resting plane rather than being twisted into line with the blade. Combined with an angled thumb hole, that removes the residual rotation at the thumb base — the joint that develops arthritis and De Quervain's tenosynovitis. If you already get a nagging ache at the base of your thumb after a long day, this is the change most likely to help.
What shear length should I buy?
Measure from your wrist crease to the tip of your middle finger; that measurement in inches is roughly your baseline length. Then adjust for your work: shorter (5.5"–6") for precision, fringes and dry detailing; longer (6.5"–7") for barbering and scissor-over-comb. Otto builds at 6 inches deliberately — it is the length that will disappoint the fewest people if you are buying a single shear. Hold it before you commit: if you have to stretch or curl your thumb to reach the ring, it is the wrong size for you and getting used to it will not fix that.
How many teeth does the Otto thinning shear have?
The current product page does not publish a tooth count, and we would rather say so than guess. What it does specify is the construction — one toothed blade against one straight blade — and the intended job: blending, softening transitions and removing controlled weight without the blunt result of a cutting shear. That places it in the blending-to-texturizing role rather than the chunker role. As a rule, more teeth removes less hair and blends more softly; fewer teeth removes more and shows more. If an exact count matters for your work, contact us before ordering and we will count it.
Is the shear set better value than buying separately?
Marginally, and the real benefit is matching rather than money. The 6-inch Haircutting & Thinning Shear Set is $189.99; the same two tools bought separately are $96.00 plus $99.99, or $195.98. The saving is small. The reason to buy the set is that both shears are built at the same length with the same handle geometry, so they feel consistent in the hand — which matters more over a full day than six dollars does.
How do I look after a professional shear?
Wipe the blades with a soft dry cloth after every client, and immediately after any colour or bleach service. At the end of the day, clean, dry completely — including the pivot — and put one drop of shear or clipper oil into the joint, working it through and wiping away the excess. Never use WD-40, 3-in-1 or cooking oil. Drop-test the tension weekly. Never soak a shear or leave it in disinfectant longer than the product specifies, and never store it in a drawer with clippers and clips. The full routine takes about ninety seconds a day.
How often should shears be sharpened, and who should do it?
Sharpen when the shear fails the tissue test — folding or pushing a single ply instead of slicing it — not on a schedule. For a full-time professional with good maintenance that is roughly every 6 to 12 months. Who does it matters more than when: a convex-edged Japanese-style shear must be sharpened on a flat rotary hone by a technician who works on convex edges. A general knife sharpener or a standard bevel jig will grind a bevel onto the convex geometry and destroy it permanently — the shear will still cut, but it will never slice cut again.
Why carbon fibre for the combs rather than plastic?
Three practical reasons. Carbon fibre is anti-static, so the comb is not fighting flyaway during a blow-dry or a precision section. It is heat resistant, so it survives working near an iron or dryer without deforming the way a moulded plastic comb will. And it is light and thin, which means better visibility and manoeuvrability and less hand fatigue over a full day. It is heat resistant rather than heat proof, though — leave one pressed against a hot barrel and it will still warp.
Which Otto comb should I start with?
