What's the difference between vegan and cruelty-free?
Vegan means no animal-derived ingredients in the formula (no keratin, lanolin, silk, honey, beeswax, etc.). Cruelty-free means the product and its ingredients were not tested on animals. A product can be one without being the other: for example, a brand might use no animal ingredients (vegan) but still test on animals in certain markets, or vice versa. Is professional keratin treatment vegan?
Traditional keratin (as used in Brazilian blowouts and many strengthening treatments) is derived from animal hair, hooves, and horns — a slaughterhouse byproduct. It is not vegan. However, vegan keratin alternatives exist: hydrolyzed soy protein, wheat protein, and pea protein are commonly used as plant-based functional equivalents. Check the ingredient list — if it says "hydrolyzed keratin" without specifying source, contact the brand. If it says "hydrolyzed wheat protein" or similar, it's plant-based.
