Matrix Sizes and Formats: 300 ml vs 1 L, Duos, Kits and Backbar

300 ml or 1 L? Retail bottle or backbar gallon? Kit or singles? A practical guide to buying Matrix in the right format — and the arithmetic behind it.

The three retail sizes, and when each one pays

Most Matrix haircare on ProHair.ca is stocked in two sizes on the same product page: a 300 ml retail bottle and a 1 L professional bottle. A few lines add a gallon for backbar use.

  • 300 ml — the try-it size, and the right size for anything you use once a week (masks, toning shampoos, clarifiers).
  • 1 L — roughly three and a third times the volume for well under twice the price on every Matrix line we carry. If a shampoo is in your weekly rotation, the litre is the cheaper bottle within about two months.
  • Gallon — backbar only. It needs a pump and a decanting bottle to be usable at a station.

Two accessories make the larger sizes practical rather than annoying: the white litre pump and the black litre pump, both sized for the Matrix 1 L bottle neck.

Duos and kits — the arithmetic

Matrix's headline results are system results. The shampoo alone does not deliver 35% more volume, 7x moisture for 72 hours, or eight weeks of gloss — the pair does. That is why ProHair builds a duo page for every line that has a matching shampoo and conditioner, priced below the two bottles bought separately:

Each duo is stocked in both a 300 ml and a 1 L version on the same page, so the size choice above applies to kits too.

Going further, the Glow Mania Complete System adds the Glazing Queen mask to the pair — the full three-step routine behind the eight-week claim.

Limited seasonal kits

Matrix releases seasonal boxes at a kit price. The 2026 spring set is in stock now:

These are produced once. When the box is gone the line reverts to individual bottles at regular pricing.

Styling formats

Hold is not one axis, and the format tells you as much as the hold rating does:

Colour: tubes, tubs and volumes

All Matrix cream colour ships in 90 ml tubes; the shade, not the size, is the choice you are making. Lighteners are the format decision: Light Master comes in 450 g and 900 g, High Riser Pre-Bonded in 450 g and 900 g, and Open Air Clay in a single 900 g tub for free-hand work. Buy the 450 g if you lighten occasionally; the 900 g is materially cheaper per gram and the powder keeps well sealed.
