American Crew by Concern: Flat Hair, Build-Up, Dryness, Beard Problems and Razor Burn

Most people do not walk into a barbershop asking for a medium-hold matte paste. They walk in saying "my hair goes flat by lunch" or "my beard itches" or "I get razor bumps on my neck every time". This guide starts from the complaint and works back to the product. Everything named is currently stocked in the American Crew collection at ProHair.ca — we carry the core Canadian range rather than every SKU American Crew makes worldwide, so nothing here is a product you will have to hunt for.

One honest boundary before we start: these are grooming products, not medical treatments. Persistent scalp flaking, hair loss or skin reactions are worth a conversation with a pharmacist or a doctor, and nothing on this page is a substitute for one.

"My hair goes flat by lunchtime"

Two separate causes, and the fix depends on which one you have.

Cause one: the product is too heavy. Fine hair collapses under weight, and glossy finishes make it look flatter still because the strands reflect as one surface. Switch to matte and light:

  • Boost Powder tapped straight onto dry roots, worked in with the fingertips. It grips the hair shaft and lifts it away from the scalp; the effect looks like thicker hair rather than product, and the finish is completely matte.
  • Whip over the top. It is the lightest thing in the range and it adds body without the weight that undoes the lift.
  • Matte Clay if you need actual hold as well — the clay base absorbs surface oil, so it does not add shine on top of the problem.

Cause two: build-up. If a product that used to work has stopped working, the residue is the problem, not the product. See the next section.

The step most men skip: volume is built when the hair is drying, not after. Light Hold Texture Lotion into towel-dried hair, then blow-dry with the airflow pushing the roots up, gives you a base that no dry-hair product can replicate.

"My hair feels coated and stops responding"

Clay, pomade, hard-water minerals and scalp oil accumulate. Daily shampoo is formulated not to strip — that is what makes it safe daily and useless against residue.

  • Detox Shampoo is the reset. Used once or twice a week it clears what daily shampoo leaves behind, and hair comes out lighter and noticeably more responsive to styling. It is deliberately not an everyday product.
  • Daily Moisturizing Shampoo for the days in between — gentle enough to use every day without leaving hair stripped and brittle.
  • If your scalp feels heavy rather than your hair, 3-in-1 Tea Tree adds the cooling tea tree sensation men associate with a properly clean scalp, and covers hair, conditioning and body in one bottle.

Rule of thumb: if you use Fiber, Boost Powder or the clays daily, you need the detox weekly. If you only use Firm Hold Gel or Whip, monthly is plenty.

"My hair and scalp feel dry"

Daily washing with a stripping shampoo is the usual culprit, and short hair shows it fastest because the ends are never far from the scalp.

  • Daily Moisturizing Shampoo — built specifically to be used every day, which is a real formulation constraint: it has to lift a day's sweat and oil without leaving hair squeaky. Stocked in 100 ml, 250 ml and 1 L.
  • Cut back on the detox. If hair feels dry and you are clarifying twice a week, clarify once instead.
  • Switch to a cream styler. Forming Cream and Grooming Cream condition as they hold; clays and powders are drying by design because absorbing oil is their job.

An honest gap: we do not currently stock a separate American Crew conditioner. If your hair needs a dedicated conditioning step beyond what the 3-in-1 leaves behind, ask us — and if we cannot get it, we will point you at a brand we can.

"I want one bottle in the shower"

Not a problem, a preference — and it is the reason the 3-in-1 exists.

  • 3-in-1 cleanses like a daily shampoo, leaves a light conditioning film so hair combs out without tangling, and doubles as a body wash. It is not a substitute for a dedicated treatment shampoo, but for daily use on short hair it is a complete routine. Stocked in 100 ml, 250 ml and 1 L.
  • 3-in-1 Tea Tree is the same idea with a cooler, sharper scent and the tingle men associate with a clean scalp. Same three jobs, same 100 ml / 250 ml / 1 L sizes.

The 100 ml sizes are the travel option and the cheapest way to find out whether you like the scent before committing to a litre.

"My beard is dry, itchy or wiry"

Most beard problems are skin problems. The hair grows out of skin that regular shampoo strips and bar soap strips harder, and the flaking, itching and wiry texture all follow from that. Treat the skin, then the hair.

Complaint Product Why it works
Beard smells or feels dirty Beard Foam Cleanser Dispenses as a soft foam that spreads through a beard without pulling, lifts food, oil and product, and rinses clean while leaving the hair pliable. Massage it in with the fingertips so it reaches the skin.
Wiry, coarse, flyaway hair Beard Serum A light, fast-absorbing oil that conditions coarse facial hair and the skin under it without the greasy sheen heavier oils leave. A few drops warmed in the palms, worked in from the cheeks down.
Beard splays, will not hold shape Beard Balm Does what an oil cannot: conditions and gives enough light hold to shape. Warm it until it melts, then work from the skin outward.
Flaking skin under the beard 2-in-1 Skin Moisturizer & Beard Conditioner Hydrates the face and the beard in one step, so the skin underneath stops flaking and the hair stops feeling wiry. Light enough to disappear on a clean shave, rich enough for a full beard — it works right through the awkward growing-out stage.

The order: cleanse with the foam, dry, moisturise the skin with the 2-in-1, then serum or balm depending on whether you need softness or shape. Serum for softness, balm for shape; you do not need both on the same day.

"I get razor burn and ingrown hairs"

Razor burn is drag. The blade catches instead of gliding, and the neck — where hair grows in several directions at once — gets the worst of it. Three products, three distinct jobs, and the pre-shave step is the one that actually fixes it.

  • Before: Ultra Gliding Shave Oil. A few drops massaged into wet skin soften coarse hair and lay down a slip layer, so the blade glides instead of dragging. Drag is the single biggest cause of razor burn and ingrown hairs on the neck. Use it under a shave cream or on its own.
  • During: Precision Shave Gel. It goes on translucent, so you can see exactly where the blade is going — the reason it is the barber's pick for edging a beard, shaping sideburns or cleaning a neckline. It creates a thin lubricating layer instead of a thick foam, so the guide lines stay visible.
  • After: Revitalizing Toner. Lifts the last of the shave residue, tightens the look of pores and cools skin that has just been scraped, without the sting of a high-alcohol splash. Cotton pad or straight into the palms, then moisturise.
  • Then: 2-in-1 Skin Moisturizer. The moisturising step most men skip is the one that keeps the skin from reacting the next morning.

An honest gap: we stock the precision gel rather than a full-lather shaving cream. If you want a rich brush-and-bowl lather, that is a different product and we do not currently carry the American Crew version — ask us and we will tell you whether we can source it.

"I want my hair to look thicker"

Nothing in this range grows hair, and no honest guide will tell you otherwise. What it can do is change how much hair looks like it is there:

  • Boost Powder lifts at the root, which creates the visual space that reads as density.
  • Matte finishes — Matte Clay, Defining Paste, Fiber — separate strands visually. Glossy finishes merge them.
  • Whip adds body without weight, so the lift survives past mid-morning.
  • Detox Shampoo weekly, because build-up flattens fine hair faster than anything else.
