A professional shear is a precision instrument with two mating surfaces held at a controlled tension. Everything that goes wrong with one comes down to three causes: corrosion at the edge, debris in the pivot, and impact damage. All three are preventable, and the routine that prevents them takes about ninety seconds a day.
This matters commercially as much as practically. A $96 shear maintained properly will outlast five neglected ones, and sharpening removes material every time — a shear sharpened four times a year has a much shorter life than one sharpened annually.
After every client: wipe
Hair carries product, sebum, salt and — during colour and lightening services — chemistry that attacks steel. Chromium's passive layer resists corrosion; it does not survive bleach left sitting on a blade.
Wipe the blades with a soft dry cloth or chamois after every client. Wipe along the blade from pivot to tip, never across the edge. A microfibre cloth is fine; paper towel is not — it is abrasive enough to dull an acute convex edge over time, and it sheds fibres into the pivot.
If you have been cutting hair with colour, bleach or perm solution on it, wipe immediately. Do not wait for the end of the service.
End of day: clean, dry, oil
1. Clean
Open the shear fully and wipe both blade faces and the inside of the hollow. If there is visible build-up, a cloth barely dampened with warm water and a trace of mild soap will lift it. Never soak a shear and never put one in an ultrasonic cleaner — water in the pivot causes corrosion where you cannot see it and cannot reach it.
2. Dry completely
Open the blades and dry every surface, including the pivot area. Any moisture left overnight in the pivot will rust the internal washers. This is the step most often skipped and the one that quietly kills shears.
3. Oil the pivot
Stand the shear with the blades open in a V. Put one drop — one — of proper shear oil into the pivot joint where the blades cross. Close and open the shear ten to fifteen times to draw the oil through the joint. Stand it tip-down on a cloth for a minute, then wipe away everything that comes out.
Use shear oil or clipper oil. Do not use WD-40, 3-in-1, cooking oil or sewing-machine oil: WD-40 is a water-displacing solvent that strips lubricant rather than adding it, and vegetable oils go rancid and gum the pivot solid.
4. Store safely
A shear in a drawer with clippers, clips and combs will be chipped. Store it in its case or a shear pouch, blades closed, dry.
Disinfection
Follow your provincial and local requirements — in Canada these are set provincially and enforced by regional public health, so check what applies where you work. Practically: clean first, because disinfectant does not work through debris; use the shortest contact time the product specifies; and rinse, dry completely and re-oil afterward. Extended immersion is where shears get destroyed. Quaternary ammonium products are gentler on steel than high-concentration alcohol soaks or anything chlorine-based.
Tension: check it weekly
Tension changes as the pivot wears, and running loose is a fast way to damage an edge — the blades push past each other instead of shearing cleanly.
The drop test: hold the shear by one ring only, blades fully open at 90 degrees. Let the free blade fall. It should close about two-thirds of the way and stop. Falls shut → too loose, tighten. Barely moves → too tight, loosen. Adjust in small increments with the correct key or screw, and re-test after each turn.
When does it actually need sharpening?
Sharpen when the shear tells you, not on a schedule.
The wet tissue test: hold a single ply of tissue loosely and cut through it with the blade tips. A sharp shear slices cleanly to the point. A dull one folds, pushes or tears.
The signals that matter on the floor:
- Hair folds or bends at the tips instead of cutting.
- You feel a catch or hear a scrape at a particular point along the blade.
- You find yourself squeezing to complete a cut.
- The shear pushes hair forward rather than cutting through it.
Before you book a sharpening, rule out the cheaper causes: check tension, clean the blades properly, and check for product residue. A large share of "blunt" shears are simply dirty or badly tensioned.
Realistic intervals
- Full-time professional, good maintenance → roughly every 6–12 months.
- Part-time → every 12–18 months.
- Occasional → every couple of years, or when the tissue test fails.
Who should sharpen it
This matters more than any other decision in this guide. A convex-edged Japanese-style shear must be sharpened on a flat rotary hone by a technician who works on convex shears. A general knife sharpener, a mall kiosk, or anyone using a standard bevel jig will grind a bevel onto your convex edge and destroy the geometry permanently. The shear will cut afterward — it will simply never slice cut again.
Ask a prospective sharpener one question: "do you sharpen convex edges on a flat hone?" If the answer is vague, go elsewhere. Never attempt it yourself with a stone or a handheld sharpener.
The things that ruin shears
- Cutting anything that is not hair — foil, paper, extension tape, elastics, clip-in wefts.
- Dropping them. A single tip impact can chip an edge beyond repair.
- Closing them on a bobby pin or sectioning clip.
- Leaving bleach or colour on the blades.
- Storing them wet.
- Prolonged immersion in disinfectant.
- Lending them. Everyone has their own tension preference and hand pressure.
Thinning shears, razors and combs
