Purple shampoo is the most misused product in blonde haircare. Used well it keeps lightened hair clean and bright; used badly it leaves hair dull, grey-looking or lilac at the ends. The rules are simple.
What it actually does
Purple sits opposite yellow on the colour wheel. Lightened hair oxidises toward yellow over the weeks after a service, and a purple pigment cancels that yellow so the tone reads clean rather than brassy. It is a toner. It does not condition, repair or lighten, and it will not fix damage.
How often
Once or twice a week for most people, not every wash. Very pale blonde and silver hair porous enough to grab pigment fast may need it only once a week. On the other washes use a normal shampoo — Glossy Pearl or Keratin Smooth, depending on the hair.
How long to leave it on
Two to three minutes for maintenance. Five minutes maximum when brassiness has built up. Leaving purple shampoo on "as long as possible" is what causes the grey, flat cast people complain about — the pigment keeps depositing the whole time it is on the hair.
The mistakes that cause problems
- Using it on dry hair to work faster. It deposits unevenly and the porous ends take far more pigment than the roots.
- Using it every wash. Pigment accumulates. Hair looks dull long before anyone connects it to the shampoo.
- Skipping the conditioner. Toning shampoos are low in conditioning agents by design. Follow with the matching Colour Brightening conditioner or a mask.
- Using it on unlightened hair. There is no yellow to cancel, so there is no benefit.
If it has gone too far
A purple cast fades. Wash with a clarifying or normal shampoo two or three times and it will lift. Do not try to correct it with more product.
Rounding out the routine
The Colour Brightening mask is the weekly step — it tones and conditions at once, which suits hair that is porous from lightening. Between toning washes, a heat protectant matters more on blonde hair than on any other colour, because lightened hair is structurally weaker.
